PM Narendra Modi has launched Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to provide comfortable houses to Below Poverty Line (BPL), Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) & Low Income Group (LIG) people. Government will launch Rental Housing Policy. Now Narendra Modi will pay house rent on behalf of poor people. This news has been released by an officer of Urban Development Ministry.
The Narendra Modi government may now pay your rent. The Centre is all set to roll out a Rs 2,700-crore welfare scheme in 100 smart cities to give rent vouchers to the urban poor.
The government would launch the new rental housing policy with the rent vouchers for below poverty line (BPL) families. Though the policy has been in the works for three years, the first component is likely to be rolled out in 2017-18 financial year in the smart cities.
The scheme is expected to cost Rs 2,713 crore every year to implement in smart cities. Aimed directly at the urban poor and helping the migrant population, the scheme would involve distribution of rent vouchers by urban local bodies.
The tenant would give these vouchers to the landowner, who in turn would be able to redeem them at any citizen service bureau. If the rent is higher than the value of rent voucher, the tenant would pay the difference in cash to the landowner.
Motives of this scheme
- Main motive of this scheme is to provide an ease to urban poor people & those who has come from other states & they are living on rent.
- Properties forfeited Under Benami Act will be used to fulfill demand of houses in cities.
Main Points of this scheme
- This Yojana is in still under progress but government has selected 100 Smart Cities.
- This scheme will be implemented in selected cities only.
- It is expected that Rental Housing Policy scheme will be started in current year.
- Under this Yojana “Rent Vouchers” will be given to urban Poor people. Tenant will use these rent vouchers to pay their rent.
- Tenant will give these rent vouchers to landlord & landlord will redeem this voucher from Citizen Service Bureau.
- In case if rent is higher than the amount of rent voucher then tenant will have to pay extra amount by his/herself.
- Rs. 2,713 Crore per year is expected amount for this scheme.
Important Points
- According to National Sample Survey in 2009 around 355 people live on rent in cities & according to the census of year 2011 27.5% people live on rent.
- Value of rent vouchers will be decided according to the size of family & current rate of rent in cities.
- Ministry will now prepare a cabinet note to pursue this plan.
